You are encouraged to report negative side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA. Visit the FDA MedWatch website or call 1-800-FDA-1088. Before therapy with Suprax is instituted, careful inquiry should be made to determine whether the patient has had previous hypersensitivity reactions to cephalosporins, penicillins, or other drugs.

If an allergic reaction to Suprax occurs, discontinue the drug. Clostridium difficile associated diarrhea CDAD has been reported with use of nearly all antibacterial agents, including Suprax, and may range in severity from mild diarrhea to fatal colitis. Treatment with antibacterial agents alters the normal flora of the colon leading to overgrowth of C. Hypertoxin producing isolates of C. CDAD must be considered in all patients who present with diarrhea following antibiotic use. Careful medical history is necessary since CDAD has been reported to occur over two months after the administration of antibacterial agents.

Cefixime is contraindicated in patients with cephalosporin hypersensitivity or cephamycin hypersensitivity. Cefixime should be used cautiously in patients with hypersensitivity to penicillin. The structural similarity between cefixime and penicillin means that cross-reactivity can occur. Penicillins can cause a variety of hypersensitivity reactions ranging from mild rash to fatal anaphylaxis.

Patients who have experienced severe penicillin hypersensitivity should not receive cefixime. Additionally, cefixime should be administered cautiously to any patient who has demonstrated any form of allergy, particularly to drugs. Use cefixime with caution in patients with renal impairment, including renal failure, since the drug is eliminated via renal mechanisms. This includes patients undergoing continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis CAPD and hemodialysis.

Dosages should be adjusted. Dialysis patients should be carefully monitored. Almost all antibacterial agents have been associated with pseudomembranous colitis antibiotic-associated colitis which may range in severity from mild to life-threatening. In the colon, overgrowth of Clostridia may exist when normal flora is altered subsequent to antibacterial administration.

The toxin produced by Clostridium difficile is a primary cause of pseudomembranous colitis. It is known that systemic use of antibiotics predisposes patients to development of pseudomembranous colitis. Consideration should be given to the diagnosis of pseudomembranous colitis in patients presenting with diarrhea following antibacterial administration.
