Retrovir

Generic Name: Retrovir

What is Retrovir?

In some cases, Retrovir might improve the immune system, meaning that hidden infections can come to light. It is also unknown whether the drug affects the child later on in life. Do not breastfeed with HIV or while on Retrovir. Retrovir needs to be used exactly as your doctor has advised and prescribed to you.

Check your medicine labels for the exact dosage. If you are getting the doses from your doctor, they will be delivered as injections at the hospital or the clinic. It is very important that you do not miss your Retrovir dosage.

Before prescribing RETROVIR Capsules or Tablets, children should be assessed for the ability to swallow capsules or tablets. If a child is unable to reliably swallow a RETROVIR Capsule or Tablet, the RETROVIR Syrup formulation should be prescribed. RETROVIR Syrup should be used to provide accurate dosage when whole tablets or capsules are not appropriate.

Retrovir should not be taken alone as monotherapy or with just one other anti-HIV drug. One important clinical trial conducted by the U.

This requires taking Retrovir by mouth during pregnancy, and receiving Retrovir through an IV line at the time of delivery. After delivery, the baby will take Retrovir syrup, by mouth, four times a day for six weeks. What about drug interactions. They are "antagonistic," which means that they do not work well together and can cause additional side effects. Ribavirin is an oral medication used to treat hepatitis C.

In these studies, ribavirin appeared to affect the way Retrovir is broken down by the body into its active form.

This can make Retrovir less effective against HIV. However, many doctors report that this hasn't been in a problem in their patients taking both drugs. Rifadin rifampin and Mycobutin rifabutin can lower levels of Retrovir in the bloodstream, which can cause the drug to be less effective against HIV. If you need to take Rifadin or Mycobutin, it might be necessary to switch your Retrovir for another nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor NRTI that does not interact with these drugs.

What about side effects. Contact your doctor immediately if you develop unusual fatigue, pale skin, sore throat, fever, or chills, which may be signs of bone marrow problems. These problems are more likely to occur if you combine Retrovir with other drugs that cause these same side effects.

What should I avoid while taking Retrovir?

These thymidine analogue mutations alone do not cause high-level cross-resistance to any of the other nucleosides, allowing for the subsequent use of any of the other approved reverse transcriptase inhibitors.

Two patterns of multi-drug resistance mutations, the first characterised by mutations in the HIV reverse transcriptase at codons 62, 75, 77, 116 and 151 and the second involving a T69S mutation plus a 6-base pair insert at the same position, result in phenotypic resistance to AZT as well as to the other approved nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors.

Either of these two patterns of multinucleoside resistance mutations severely limits future therapeutic options. These data, and data from a published study comparing zidovudine regimens to prevent maternal-foetal HIV transmission have shown that short maternal treatments from week 36 of pregnancy are less efficacious than longer maternal treatments from week 14-34 of pregnancy in the reduction of perinatal HIV transmission.

From studies with intravenous Retrovir, the mean terminal plasma half-life was 1. Data indicate that zidovudine crosses the placenta and is found in amniotic fluid and foetal blood.
