PhosLo Gelcaps calcium acetate are administered orally for the control of hyperphosphatemia in end stage renal failure. Calcium acetate PhosLo when taken with meals, combines with dietary phosphate to form insoluble calcium phosphate which is excreted in the feces. PhosLo is highly soluble at neutral pH, making the calcium readily available for binding to phosphate in the proximal small intestine.
PhosLo is indicated for the control of hyperphosphatemia in end stage renal failure and does not promote aluminum absorption. No other calcium supplements should be given concurrently with PhosLo. Progressive hypercalcemia due to overdose of PhosLo may be severe as to require emergency measures. Radiographic evaluation of suspect anatomical region may be helpful in early detection of soft tissue calcification.
In patients on dialysis, phosphate binders are routinely used to control serum phosphorus by absorbing dietary phosphate during the transit through the intestine.
However, the use of phosphate binders for non-dialyzed patients with chronic kidney disease CKD is not an FDA approved indication, although some physicians treat patients prior to dialysis based on clinical judgment. The goal of this study is to demonstrate the efficacy of calcium acetate PhosLo in controlling serum phosphorus in patients with moderate to severe decrease in kidney function.

Hypercalcemia during pregnancy may increase the risk for maternal and neonatal complications such as stillbirth, preterm delivery, and neonatal hypocalcemia and hypoparathyroidism. Clinical studies of calcium acetate did not include sufficient numbers of subjects aged 65 and over to determine whether they respond differently from younger subjects. Other clinical experience has not identified differences in responses between the elderly and younger patients. In general, dose selection for an elderly patient should be cautious, usually starting at the low end of the dosing range, reflecting the greater frequency of decreased hepatic, renal, or cardiac function, and of concomitant disease or other drug therapy.
Its chemical name is calcium acetate.
