What is Pentasa?

Consult your doctor before breast-feeding. Pentasa Mesalamine 500mg is used to treat a certain bowel disease ulcerative colitis. Pentasa Mesalamine 500mg belongs to a class of drugs known as aminosalicylates. Take Pentasa Mesalamine 500mg by mouth as directed by your doctor, usually 4 times daily. If you are taking the capsule form of Pentasa Mesalamine 500mg, you may take it with or without food. If you are taking the tablet form of Pentasa Mesalamine 500mg, take it with meals.

Swallow Pentasa Mesalamine 500mg whole. Use Pentasa Mesalamine 500mg regularly in order to get the most benefit from it. Diarrhea, headache, nausea, or vomiting may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Remember that your doctor has prescribed Pentasa Mesalamine 500mg because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects.

Many people using Pentasa Mesalamine 500mg do not have serious side effects. Infrequently, Pentasa Mesalamine 500mg can worsen ulcerative colitis.

How should I take Pentasa?

Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended. This medication can cause unusual results with certain medical tests. What should I avoid while taking Pentasa?

There have been rare reports of interstitial nephritis in patients receiving PENTASA. In animal studies, a 13-week oral toxicity study in mice and 13-week and 52-week oral toxicity studies in rats and cynomolgus monkeys have shown the kidney to be the major target organ of mesalamine toxicity.

Patients with preexisting renal disease, increased BUN or serum creatinine, or proteinuria should be carefully monitored, especially during the initial phase of treatment. Mesalamine-induced nephrotoxicity should be suspected in patients developing renal dysfunction during treatment. Use of mesalamine may lead to spuriously elevated test results when measuring urinary normetanephrine by liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection, because of the similarity in the chromatograms of normetanephrine and mesalamine's main metabolite, Nacetylaminosalicylic acid N-Ac-5-ASA.

Pentasa side effects
