What is Oxsoralen?

Do not use this medication if you have active melanoma or a history of melanoma or invasive squamous cell carcinomas. If you have basal cell carcinoma, your doctor will monitor you closely for any signs that your cancer is getting worse while you take this drug. This medication is broken down by your liver.

Your doctor will monitor you closely if you take this drug. Talk with your doctor about whether this treatment will work for you. They will need to decide if you can stand for long periods of time, or handle the heat stress caused by UVA therapy. This drug should be used only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus.

Talk to your doctor if you breastfeed your child. You may need to decide whether to stop breastfeeding or stop taking this medication. Talk with your doctor about whether this drug is safe for you. If you have a history of cataracts, heart conditions, kidney or liver problems, or skin cancer, ask about any problems that this drug might cause. The safety of methoxsalen oral capsules has not been established in children.

You must remain under the care of a doctor while taking methoxsalen. You should not use methoxsalen if you have a condition that makes you more sensitive to light lupus, porphyria, albinism, and othersor if you have a history of skin cancer or damage to the lenses of your eyes due to surgery, injury, or genetic condition.

If your doctor changes your brand, strength, or type of methoxsalen, your dosage needs and UVA light therapy schedule may change. Oxsoralen-Ultra and 8-Mop are not equivalent medicines and may not have the same dose or schedule. Ask your pharmacist if you have any questions about the new kind of methoxsalen you receive at the pharmacy.

You should not use this medicine if you are allergic to methoxsalen or similar "psoralen" medicines, or if you have:Before your UVA treatment: Do not expose your skin to sunlight for at least 24 hours before you take methoxsalen. Wear protective clothing and use sunscreen SPF 30 or higher when you are outdoors or near a window.

How should I take Oxsoralen?

Some products that may interact with this drug include: other medications that may make your skin sensitive to light such as anthralin, coal tar, griseofulvin, sulfa antibiotics like sulfamethoxazole, fluoroquinolone antibiotics like ciprofloxacin, thiazide diuretics like hydrochlorothiazide, tetracycline antibiotics like doxycycline.
