Generic Name: Imitrex
What is Imitrex?
Sometimes if that doesn't work, I couple that with Fioricet, and that usually takes care of it. I have zero complaints about Imitrex, highly recommended for migraine sufferers.
I can't even express how many weeks I got back in my life last year because of it. The side effects were really hard to explain but I felt horrible. I cut down to half of a 25 mg pill and my body must have gotten used to it because I rarely have side effects. I almost never have to deal with a full-blown migraine and it's been life-changing.
That said, I still get a few migraines a month now, and Immitrex is my go-to. There have been a few cases where I'd take an Immitrex when waking up with a migraine and just vomit it out 5 minutes later, so I'd be interested in an epi-pen version for really bad situations. Didn't know that existed. They are also extremely unpleasant.
I can't even describe the side effects, it's like my brain is on fire. But it goes away after 30 min or so.
In vitro studies with human microsomes suggest that sumatriptan is metabolized by MAO, predominantly the A isoenzyme. Most of a radiolabeled dose of sumatriptan excreted in the urine is the major metabolite indole acetic acid IAA or the IAA glucuronide, both of which are inactive. The pharmacokinetics of sumatriptan in the elderly mean age: 72 years, 2 males and 4 females and in subjects with migraine mean age: 38 years, 25 males and 155 females were similar to that in healthy male subjects mean age: 30 years.
The effect of mild to moderate hepatic disease on the pharmacokinetics of subcutaneously administered sumatriptan has been evaluated. There were no significant differences in the pharmacokinetics of subcutaneously administered sumatriptan in moderately hepatically impaired subjects compared with healthy controls.
The pharmacokinetics of subcutaneously administered sumatriptan in patients with severe hepatic impairment has not been studied. Dogs receiving oral sumatriptan developed corneal opacities and defects in the corneal epithelium. Defects in the corneal epithelium were noted in a 60-week study. In controlled clinical trials enrolling more than 1,000 patients during migraine attacks who were experiencing moderate or severe pain and 1 or more of the symptoms enumerated in Table 3, onset of relief began as early as 10 minutes following a 6-mg IMITREX Injection.
Lower doses of IMITREX Injection may also prove effective, although the proportion of patients obtaining adequate relief was decreased and the latency to that relief is greater with lower doses.
In 2 randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trials of IMITREX Injection 6 mg in 1,104 patients with moderate or severe migraine pain Studies 2 and 3the onset of relief was less than 10 minutes. IMITREX Injection also relieved photophobia, phonophobia sound sensitivitynausea, and vomiting associated with migraine attacks.
How should I take Imitrex?
Headache relief was defined as a reduction in headache severity to mild or no pain. Results are shown in Table 1. The Sumatriptan Cluster Headache Study Group published a double-blind, crossover study in 39 31 male, 8 female patients admitted to the hospital with cluster headache. The study demonstrated that Imitrex 6 mg subcutaneous SC was significantly more effective than placebo for the treatment of cluster headache and related symptoms.
Hospitalization began when the patient entered a cluster period and generally lasted several days. The minimum interval between injections was 24 hours and the longest interval was 9 days.
What should I avoid while taking Imitrex?
Another advantage is that you can move between the dosage forms. There is allowance for individual migraine variation between individual patients. For instance, one can use an Imitrex tablet for mild headaches or headaches having slow onset with the option of switching to an Imitrex nasal spray if the headache onset accelerates or has more nausea associated with it. Imitrex injectable can be used if the headache is coming on rapidly, the patient is vomiting, or if a break-through headache occurs with tablet use.
When Imitrex pill or nasal spray is used as a starting dose, Imitrex allows the option of a follow-up with Imitrex injectable in the event that the headache does not respond or worsens.
