What is Glucophage?

Also this generic has been causing so much gas and abdominal discomfort that I haven't had since starting on the XR. You can also find more resources in our Help Center. What is your email. Metformin, sold under the trade name Glucophage, is used to treat diabetes, but several studies show that it also helps non-diabetics to lose weight by reducing hunger 1. You may be overweight because your body makes too much insulin, especially if your store your fat primarily in your belly.

When you eat, your blood sugar level rises. The higher it rises, the more insulin your pancreas releases. Insulin makes you fat by acting on your brain to make you hungry, your liver to manufacture fat, and the fat cells in your belly to fill with fat.

That is why this blog is so helpful in keeping us all up to date on what is happening. I was not aware that metforminXR has been generic that long. Richard Bernstein continues to recommend that his patients use branded Glucophage as he believes it is markedly superior to the generic forms. And as one might imagine, Metformin XR is a variation of Metformin that is made to be slow release.

The prepration of the active ingredient an "inactive" ingredients are probably what makes all the difference in the medication and hence there could be a significant variation in the performance of different generic versions.

All generic drug manufacturers are evaluated and approved individually by the FDA. But the FDA doesn't rate them for effectiveness, which they probably should do. There have been some reports of some generic formulations of metformin having a "fishy smell". I don't really think it's good that a medication is so distasteful patients can't eat.

Seems like a medication change would be compassionate at those situations. I mean, the GLP-1s are designed to promote nausea, but I think if another oral med was that problematic, it would be good to change to a different form. That is our "rule". When a person has diarrhea, nausea lasting over several weeks to a month, we will try the switch to brand name and it has been very successful.

I don't feel GLP-1 are to promote nausea, rather the slower release from the gut and the improved satiety will promote that- our biggest patient tips to success include smaller, low fat meals when starting a GLP-1. And that nausea passes most often, as the mild SE of metformin branded.
