What is Fosamax?

For people with low calcium blood levels: Your doctor should give you calcium supplements before you start taking this drug. Alendronate can make your condition worse. For people with serious kidney problems: If you have severe kidney problems or a history of kidney disease, you may not be able to clear this drug from your body well.

For pregnant women: Alendronate is a category C pregnancy drug. This drug should only be used if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. If it does, it may cause side effects in a child who is breastfed. Talk to your doctor if you breastfeed your child. You may need to decide whether to stop breast-feeding or stop taking this medication.

For seniors: The kidneys of older adults may not work as well as they used to.

Your doctor can suggest an exercise regimen that will not put undue stress on already compromised bones. Hormone therapy has been thought to help with osteoporosis. But as we've learned over the past few years, hormone therapy has its own set of side effects, including the risk of some cancers and other heart problems.
