Generic Name: Cytoxan
What is Cytoxan?
It is often classified as a "cytotoxic agent", as it works as an alkylating agent that explains its utility also as a chemotherapeutic agent. Because it is traditionally used at very high doses in oncology as compared with nephrology, the risk of side effects is dramatically increased in oncology patients.
However, the risk of malignancy--most notably bladder cancer, but also leukemias and non-melanoma skin cancers--is still present in nephrology patients treated for conditions such as lupus nephritis or ANCA-associated vasculitis. How can you minimize this risk. A 2008 study by Faurschou et al looked at a cohort of 293 patients diagnosed with Wegener's granulomatosis, many of which were treated with cyclophosphamide.
They found that the risk of bladder cancer or leukemias was elevated for those explosed to a cumulative dose greater than 36 grams, but there was no increased risk of either cancer for those with a cumulative dose less than 36 grams. A cumulative dose of 36 grams would correspond to taking Cytoxan 100mg a day for 1 year.
The authors also report that patients developed bladder cancer between 6. One strategy for giving Cytoxan in Wegener's that I have seen used quite often is giving Cytoxan and prednisone when the disease is initially diagnosed for a period of 6 months--then transitioning to, say, steroids and azathioprine. This way, the Cytoxan can be used to get the disease under relative control without causing the dramatically increased risk in cancers, and still could be used a 2nd time if there is another serious flare in the future.
Careful monitoring by your doctor may decrease your risk. This medication may rarely cause very serious effects on the heart, especially when used in high doses, or in combination with radiation treatment or certain other chemotherapy drugs e. Sterility is usually temporary with this medication, but can be permanent in some cases. Consult your doctor for more details. Although cyclophosphamide is used to treat cancer, in some patients it may increase the risk of developing another form of cancer, sometimes months to years after treatment.
It is important to be closely monitored by your doctor during treatment. You should also see your doctor regularly after treatment is finished. Tell your doctor right away if you develop: unusual growths or lumps, swollen glands, unexplained or sudden weight loss, night sweats, pain in the pelvis, painful or frequent urination. A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. This is not a complete list of possible side effects.
If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088 or at www. In Canada - Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects.
How should I take Cytoxan?
Regarding the side effects, about the time I started feeling "normal", I was back in chemo. It was an extremely miserable 6 month period.
What should I avoid while taking Cytoxan?
Also, do not take cyclosporine while breast-feeding, since it can be passed to your baby through breast milk. Cyclosporine interacts with certain drugs, so be sure to notify your doctor of any medications you may be taking, including prescription and over-the-counter drugs, supplements, and vitamins.
DMARDs not only reduce this pain and swelling, but they may also be able to decrease long term damage to your joints. Methotrexate is one of the most commonly used drugs for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, and it is used in lupus patients to alleviate the joint pain and swelling of polyarthritis arthritis involving multiple joints.
It is only mildly effective for more severe lupus symptoms involving the kidneys and other organs and should be used carefully in people with these conditions. Historically, methotrexate has been used to treat cancer and psoriasis, a skin condition that can also affect the joints.

I tend to think that Terry will always come out on the right side of any statistics because of his healthy lifestyle and laid back nature.
The drug name is Ocrelizumab, and I guess it's similar to the Rituximab yet key word is similar, therefore not same there is a side effects on there that is quite risky for me to take at this stage and that's why I think that Cytoxin treatment might be the best fit at this time.
While it is getting better, he knows that I would much rather sit with heat packs than do much of anything, so he has reminded me if I feel the need to do something fine other wise let it sit and he will take care of it when he gets home. I am also truly blessed to have a great circle of friends and neighbors, heck even strangers around me. I have been getting through this with a whole lot of praying and listening to gospel music, and trusting that God will bring me through.
I refuse to let cancer take me, after it took my daughter.
Where can I get more information?
However, it is very difficult to prove all cancer cells are gone.
That will be the biggest, best and brightest light, but little lights are nice, too.
