What is Generic Clozaril?

You will be prescribed clozapine by a specialist doctor who will keep a thorough and close check on your progress. Clozapine is prescribed to relieve the symptoms of psychosis. This is the name used by doctors to describe a disordered state of mind. Clozapine is prescribed in particular for people with schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a mental health problem that causes disordered ideas, beliefs and experiences.

People with schizophrenia can have difficulty knowing which thoughts and experiences are true and real and which are not. Similar symptoms to these can also sometimes occur in people who have Parkinson's disease. Some medicines are not suitable for people with certain conditions, and sometimes a medicine may only be used if extra care is taken. For these reasons, before you start taking clozapine it is important that your doctor knows:Along with their useful effects, most medicines can cause unwanted side-effects although not everyone experiences them.

Your doctor will discuss the risks of the treatment with you before you start taking clozapine.

Prescribers are encouraged to keep a record of all patients' blood results and to take any steps necessary to prevent the patient being accidentally rechallenged in the future. Patients who have been on Clozaril for more than 18 weeks and have had their treatment interrupted for more than 3 days but less than 4 weeks should have their WBC count and ANC monitored weekly for an additional 6 weeks.

If no haematological abnormality occurs, monitoring at intervals not exceeding 4 weeks may be resumed. If Clozaril treatment has been interrupted for 4 weeks or longer, weekly monitoring is required for the next 18 weeks of treatment and the dose should be re-titrated see section 4. Patients with rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance, the Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption should not take this medicine.

Orthostatic hypotension, with or without syncope, can occur during Clozaril treatment. Such events are more likely to occur with concurrent use of a benzodiazepine or any other psychotropic agent see section 4. Therefore, patients starting Clozaril treatment require close medical supervision. Monitoring of standing and supine blood pressure is necessary during the first weeks of treatment in patients with Parkinson's disease.

Analysis of safety databases suggests that the use of Clozaril is associated with an increased risk of myocarditis especially during, but not limited to, the first two months of treatment. Some cases of myocarditis have been fatal. Other symptoms which may be present in addition to the above include flu-like symptoms.

If myocarditis or cardiomyopathy is suspected, Clozaril treatment should be promptly stopped and the patient immediately referred to a cardiologist. Patients with clozapine-induced myocarditis or cardiomyopathy should not be re-exposed to Clozaril. In addition, there have been post marketing reports of myocardial infarction which may be fatal.

What should I avoid while taking Generic Clozaril?

In view of this risk, the use of Clozaril should be limited to patients who are treatment-resistant or patients with psychosis in Parkinson's disease when other treatment strategies have failed see section 4. In steady-state conditions, when given twice daily, peak blood levels occur on an average at 2. Clozaril is almost completely metabolised before excretion by CYP1A2 and CYP3A4, and to some extent by CYP2C19 and CYP2D6.

Generic Clozaril side effects

Low levels of potassium or magnesium in the blood may also increase your risk of QT prolongation. Talk to your doctor about using clozapine safely. This drug may make you dizzy or drowsy or cause blurred vision. Do not drive, use machinery, or do any activity that requires alertness or clear vision until you are sure you can perform such activities safely.

Tell your doctor if you are a descendent of Ashkenazi Jews because you may be at a higher risk for a drop in your white blood cells.

Common Generic Clozaril ide effects may include:

  • Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have previously experienced such an allergy.

  • As with other antipsychotic medicines, Clozaril may cause tiredness, drowsiness, dizziness, light-headedness, fainting or seizures fits in some people, especially at the start of treatment.

  • Common adverse effects of Clozaril include sleepiness, rapid heartbeat, constipation, drooling and weight gain.

Schizophrenia is associated with an overactivity of dopamine in the brain, and this may be associated with the delusions and hallucinations that are a feature of this disease.

Clozapine works by blocking the receptors in the brain that dopamine acts on. This prevents the excessive activity of dopamine and helps to control psychotic illness.
