How should I take Canasa?
Canasa works by melting at body temperature once it is inserted into the rectum, and mesalamine is released there. Below is an example of the manufacturing procedure derived from Example 1 of US Patent8,217,083 US '083columns 78"Example 1":Question 6a Explain how viscosity of the molten suppository base influences the rate of sedimentation of mesalamine particles in suspension prior to it being cooled into a solid suppository. According to Stoke's Law, viscosity and sedimentation are inversely proportional.
As viscosity increases, rate of sedimentation decreases which is desirable. However, this can only be done to a certain extent because creating a suppository that is too viscous is not desirable due to increased difficulty when pouring into molds. This is not appropriate to make Canasa rectal suppositories as any viscosity above 5000 cps exhibits issues with flow.
