Boniva is the trade name of ibandronate sodium. It is a biphosphonate drug and is marketed in the United States by GlaxoSmithKline and Roche Laboratories. Menopausal women are more prone to osteoporosis due to hormonal changes occurring in their body. Boniva is used for the treatment of this.

Certain cells called osteoclasts as it is termed do the breaking down of the bones or reabsorption. In postemenopausal osteoporosis, the effect of bone reabsorption is more pronounced. Ibandronate inhibits the activity of these cells and consequently the process of reabsorption is reduced. Therefore, when you consider the overall turnover, there is a gain in the bone mass due to the inhibition of reabsorption.

About half the women had fewer than five positive lymph nodes and about half had more than five positive lymph nodes. After they completed chemotherapy, two-thirds of the women were randomly assigned to get Boniva for 2 years.

The rest of the women were monitored for 2 years. This means there was no difference in the risk of breast cancer recurrence between the two groups.

Many doctors advocate taking occasional holidays from the medications. So is it worth all of those risks to take bisphosphonates. The answer is, that depends. A widely cited study of 4,400 women with low bone density who had not suffered a previous fracture found relatively modest benefit from taking Fosamax.

But a related study of 2,200 women at highest risk for fracture, women who had already suffered one fractured vertebrae, found a much higher benefit after three years of Fosamax treatment. There was a 47 percent reduction in new vertebral fractures in the treated group compared to untreated.

In clinical trials, 6 mg IV over 1 hour every day for 3 days, with this regimen repeated every 4 weeks, was effective in the treatment of painful osseous metastases associated with prostate cancer.
