What is Azilect?

Short courses of orally administered medroxyprogesterone acetate 5 mg twice daily for five days have produced withdrawal bleeding in 93 percent of amenorrheic women.

Another study found that progesterone vaginal gel was successful in inducing withdrawal bleeding in women with secondary amenorrhea. This bleeding usually results from anovulation and occurs at the extremes of life. Most instances of anovulatory bleeding are examples of estrogen withdrawal or estrogen-progestin breakthrough bleeding.

Progestational agents, singly or in combination with estrogen, are often used to correct the bleeding. Although progestins cannot eliminate the cause of anovulatory cycles, they are effective in alleviating the consequences on a monthly basis.

Immaturity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis predisposes up to one third of adolescents to dysfunctional uterine bleeding. It is important to administer therapy for short periods three to six months and then reevaluate the patient. As many as 93 percent of adolescents with dysfunctional uterine bleeding respond to medical therapy. In this age group, it is particularly important to rule out endometrial atypia and cancer before initiating therapy.

These reductions are considered to be clinically insignificant. Gentamicin: It would be prudent to recommend alternative or additional contraception when oral contraceptives OCs are used in conjunction with antibiotics. Glimepiride: Progestins can impair glucose tolerance. Glipizide: Progestins can impair glucose tolerance. Glyburide: Progestins can impair glucose tolerance.

Glycylcyclines: It would be prudent to recommend alternative or additional contraception when oral contraceptives OCs are used in conjunction with antibiotics. This risk is particularly serious because griseofulvin is contraindicated during pregnancy due to the risk of teratogenic and abortifacient effects.

An alternate or additional form of contraception should be used during concomitant treatment and continued for 1 month after griseofulvin discontinuation.

If these drugs are used together, counsel the patient about the risk of pregnancy and teratogenic effects, and instruct the patient to notify the prescriber if they experience breakthrough bleeding while receiving these drugs together.

Additionally, patients taking non-oral combination contraceptives or progestins for hormone replacement therapy may also experience reduced clinical efficacy. Guarana: Use guarana cautiously in female patients who use oral contraceptives as serum concentrations of caffeine may be increased during concurrent administration with ethinyl estradiol or combined hormonal oral contraceptives.

This interaction occurs from the inhibition of methylxanthine oxidation in the liver. Patients should be informed of increased side effects associated with the caffeine component of guarana, such as nausea or tremors. Hydantoins: Drugs that can induce hepatic enzymes can accelerate the rate of metabolism of hormonal contraceptives. Pregnancy has been reported during therapy with progestin contraceptives in patients receiving hydantoins.
