What is Aygestin?

Norethindrone and norethindrone acetate should be used cautiously in patients with a history of major depression, migraine, or seizure disorder. Use of hormonal contraceptive products in female children before menarche is not indicated. Barbiturates induce hepatic enzymes and can accelerate the rate of metabolism of hormones, including progestins.

For patients on hormone replacement treatments HRT with progestins, monitor for altered clinical response, such as increased hot flashes, vaginal dryness, changes in withdrawal bleeding, or other signs of decreased hormonal efficacy.

For women taking hormonal contraception for birth control, loss of efficacy may lead to breakthrough bleeding and an increased risk for pregnancy. Pregnancy has been reported during therapy with hormonal contraceptives in patients receiving barbiturates.

If used for contraception, an alternate or additional form of contraception should be considered in patients prescribed hepatic enzyme inducing drugs. The alternative or additional contraceptive agent may need to be continued for 1 month after discontinuation of the interacting medication. Acetohexamide: Progestins can impair glucose tolerance. Patients receiving antidiabetic agents should be closely monitored for signs indicating changes in diabetic control when therapy with progestins is instituted or discontinued.

Acitretin: Acitretin reduces the efficacy of oral progestin only contraceptives. Since Acitretin may cause serious birth defects, the patient should use 2 forms of reliable contraception at the same time for at least 1 month before beginning acitretin therapy, during acitretin therapy, and must continue to use them for at least 3 years after acitretin treatment has stopped.

Be sure to tell your doctor if you experience any irregular or unexplained vaginal bleeding while taking norethindrone. Norethindrone makes some women depressed. If you've suffered from serious depression in the past, alert your doctor if you think you're having a relapse.

Norethindrone may affect cholesterol and blood-sugar levels. If you have diabetes or high cholesterol, your doctor will want to watch you closely while you are taking norethindrone.

Norethindrone may mask the onset of menopause. However, women who are of menopausal age are still eligible to take the drug. If you're being screened for cancer, make sure the doctor or lab technician knows you are taking norethindrone.

Absorption of micronized progesterone is enhanced twofold when the hormone is taken with food. Transvaginal progesterone delivery is the most practical nonoral route of administration. A new progesterone vaginal gel Crinone has sustained-release properties that were not available in the original intravaginal preparations. Intravaginal administration produces uterine effects with minimal systemic side effects. The pharmacologic effects of synthetic progestins differ from those of natural progesterone.

Reported androgenic effects of synthetic progestins include fluid retention, reduction of HDL cholesterol levels, headaches and mood disturbance.
