What is Aciphex?

Aciphex rabeprazole is a common medication used to treat excess stomach acid which was approved by the FDA in 1999 and is made by Eisai Co. While millions of people who take Aciphex or a related drug every day believe it is safe, the truth is that Aciphex is associated with multiple very serious side effects, some of which may prove fatal. If you or your loved one suffered from serious Aciphex side effects, you may be owed compensation for your physical and emotional suffering, financial damages, and more.

Aciphex belongs to the popular proton pump inhibitor PPI class of drugs, which are used frequently in both prescription and over-the-counter form to treat issues caused by excess stomach acid, such as:Other PPIs include Nexium, Prilosec, Prevacid, and Zegerid.

These medications inhibit the production of stomach acid, and while they do help users find significant relief, many experts now believe that they are vastly overused. In fact, it has been claimed that PPIs, used by up to 20 million Americans every day, should only be used when absolutely medically necessary because of the list of serious side effects associated with them.

However, it appears that many patients are unaware of the potential consequences of PPIs like Aciphex. In recent years, a growing body of research has found an association between Aciphex and a range of kidney problems. In 2015, the FDA issued an Aciphex interstitial nephritis warning.

Interstitial nephritis is a treatable condition caused by swelling of the tubules which help the kidneys filter toxins from the body.

The gastric juice contents are important to our stomach. This is because the acidity helps kill any microorganisms that come in with our food and also helps liquefy the food for easier digestion. The pH level falls well below the neutral level, giving it a pH level of less than 4, which can dissolve most edible food substances. Do take note that digestion mainly occurs in the small intestines and not in the stomach.

The stomach lining can take this much acidity and not damage the stomach cells. However, one needs to take care of the stomach, since too much acidity can eventually corrode the protective layers and damage the cells, leading to gastric ulcerations.

At the initial stage, stomach cell irritation may occur, which is characterized by reddened spots visible under an endoscope. During this time, the protective layers weaken which could lead to gastric acid to slowly corrode the area. For this, doctors often prescribed medications that prevent gastric contents from becoming too acidic. These drugs are Nexium and AcipHex, and they have their own differences.

The first medication is the Nexium, which is the brand name of Esomeprazole.
